Accessibility

Everyone should be able to get in

Last updated 6 October 2026.

This statement covers the website urbandecaygame.com, made by TPMT Games. It does not cover the game itself.

We aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. The site partly meets that standard. Most of the page can be read and used with a keyboard and a screen reader, but a few of its interactive pieces are built for a mouse, and those are listed below with what to do instead.

What works

  • Keyboard. Every link, button, tab and menu can be reached with Tab and used with Enter or Space, and a "Skip to content" link appears on the first Tab. Focus is shown with an orange outline.
  • On the home page, these all work from the keyboard:
    • Halden Radio: the dial is a slider; the arrow keys move between stations and Shift with an arrow fine-tunes. The volume, power, band and sound keys are ordinary controls.
    • The metro line of the roadmap: Tab to a station, or use the arrow keys to move along the line.
    • The character card: choose a job with the arrow keys.
    • What you carry: Tab to a piece and press Enter.
    • The screenshot viewer: Escape closes it, the arrow keys move between pictures, and focus goes back where it was.
    • The questions, the infected, the noise ruler and the seasons: ordinary buttons and pull-down answers.
  • Screen readers. The page is in English and marked as such, every page has a title and one main heading, screenshots and pictures that carry meaning have text descriptions, and decoration is hidden from screen readers. Buttons that switch something on or off say whether they are on. The radio, the city map card and the character card announce what changed.
  • Less motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, the scroll-driven story becomes a plain page, the falling ash, the scrolling street, the torch's wandering, the radio static and the counters stop, and the city map is shown fully lit.
  • No sound on its own. Nothing plays until you press play: the opening film and the radio start only when you start them, and starting one stops the other. The film never plays automatically.
  • No flashing. Nothing on the site flashes more than three times a second.
  • Your account. Every field on the account page has a label, the browser can fill in your username and password, and a problem is read out when it appears.
  • Text you can read. The site's text colours meet the contrast the standard asks for against the page behind them, small print included. A few handwritten notes drawn over pictures may be harder to read; they are decoration (below).

What does not work yet

  • The dark street ("The sick hunt by sound") is a small game played with a mouse: you aim the torch with the pointer and click to throw. It cannot be played with a keyboard or a screen reader. Nothing in it is needed to understand the game; the text above it says what it shows, and the seasons can be changed with the buttons below it.
  • The city map ("Halden, by torchlight") follows a mouse pointer. With a keyboard, press "Turn the lights on" to see the whole map at once. The district names and what each is like are given on the card beside it only as the torch passes, so a keyboard or screen reader user sees the first district only. The same districts are named elsewhere on the page and in the questions.
  • The handwritten notes on the map, the photographs and the notices are decoration and are hidden from screen readers. A few of them say things that are not written anywhere else on the page.
  • The opening film has no captions and no audio description yet.
  • Text cannot be highlighted or copied on this site, by design: the page is built to look like things found in the city, and highlighting breaks that. What you type into a form can still be selected. The press page has Copy buttons for its descriptions, and we will send any text from the site on request.
  • Phones are shown a short page instead of the home page, because the home page needs a mouse and a large screen. Open urbandecaygame.com on a computer to see all of it.
  • Account errors are read out, but are not yet linked to the field they are about.

We are working through this list. If one of these stops you doing something, tell us and it moves up.

Tell us

If something on this site does not work for you, or you need anything on it in another form, write to ThePostModernTruth@gmail.com. Say which page and what happened, and what you use to browse (for example a screen reader or zoom) if you like. We read every message.

How we checked

We checked the site ourselves: the code against the standard, the keyboard and focus order, the contrast of the text colours, and how the pages behave with motion reduced. It has not been audited by an outside expert. The site is plain HTML and CSS with JavaScript for the interactive parts; it works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
